6 airports that offer a free city tour during a stopover

Wondering what to do during a long layover? Some layovers can be very long (we once waited 17 hours in Abu Dhabi😅). What if you took advantage of a stopover to visit a city you don’t know? Besides if the visit is already organized and free, why deprive yourself isn’t it?

A free tour of… Singapore

The hub of Asia, many international flights make a stop in Singapore. You are entitled to a free city tour if you have a stopover of more than 6 hours. There are 2 types of tours: “City Sights” and “Heritage Tour”. The latter allows you to visit the different areas of the city: Little India, China Town, and Kampong Glam. While the City Sights tour stops at all the attractions of the city such as: Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Flyer, Merlion… How to book? Go to the “Free Singapore Tours” booths in terminals 2 and 3 at least 1 hour before the tour, there are 4 Heritage tours and 2 City Sights tours every day.

And if you don’t have a 6 hours stopover, you can always visit the Singapore airport, one of the most beautiful airports in the world!

A stopover in Turkey, so a visit to Istanbul?

If you have a stopover of more than 6 hours at Ataturk airport, the “tour Istanbul” program is for you. Well, you really need to have a lot of time because the visits are 6 or 9 hours long. You can discover the must-see places of the city such as the famous blue mosque, the Topkapi Palace, the Hippodrome of Constantinople and many others. How to book? Taiwan: visit Taipei from Taoyuan airport

In Taipei, you will need at least an 8-hour stopover to be able to do a city tour. There are 2 tours of 5 to 6 hours each. Tour A takes you to the Zushih Temple and the Ceramic Museum while Tour B takes you to Taipei’s must-see sights such as the Taipei 101 Tower and the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial.
How do I make a reservation? Tours are on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are 12 seats per tour. Go to the Tourist Service Center located in the arrivals hall of terminals 1 and 2. More info on their website.

Visit Seoul for free… in South Korea!

And even with a short layover, you can take a one-hour tour from Incheon Airport in Seoul, how great is that? 🙌 There are all types of one-hour tours, 2, 3, 4, and even 5 hours, some tours will focus on different temples (Haedong Yonggungsa, Incheon…) other City Tour will give a glimpse of Seoul’s must-sees.
How to book? You can either book online on their website or on the spot at the “Transit Tour” booths.
And if you don’t want to leave the airport, there are also guided tours in the airport itself!

From Narita airport, a free tour of Tokyo in Japan

You can choose to be accompanied by a volunteer guide to visit the city and the surrounding area including Tako, Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, Sakae Sawara, etc. Or they will give you all the necessary information and you can do the tour on your own.

Free tour of Amsterdam, Netherlands

A tour of beautiful Amsterdam is offered only to KLM travelers who have a stopover of more than 6 hours. The program is called Layover With A Local. You will get a free train ticket to the city center, a drink and most importantly a guided tour!
How do I make a reservation? Once you have purchased your flight tickets with KLM, you will receive an email offering you to participate in this program.

Remember to check if you don’t need a special visa to leave the airport.
